OUR CATTLE | CATTLE FOR SALE
Once an endangered species, the Dexter has advanced to the “recovering” list of the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy as the number of Dexters worldwide has grown from less than 5,000 to more than 15,000 today. One reason for the Dexters’ growing popularity is their size. This diminutive breed of cattle ranks among the smallest in the world. Measured at the rump, bulls should be 40 to 44 inches and cows should stand 38 to 42 inches high – about half the size of a typical commercial cattle breed. As a result, they require less acreage for grazing, are less expensive to feed and are easier on fences than most other breeds.
Believed to have originated in the mountains of Ireland, Dexters are extremely hardy and can thrive on marginal pasture with minimal care. They typically are gentle, intelligent and give birth easily to calves that weigh only 25 to 35 pounds.
